Sheena (1984)

Sheena is the kind of sun-drenched, old-school adventure that commits fully to its pulp-fantasy promise: a jungle heroine who moves through the wild with mythic confidence, facing down modern firepower with instinct, courage, and a touch of the supernatural. John Guillermin keeps the pace brisk and the set pieces lively, while the location photography and sweeping scenery do a lot of the storytelling, making the world feel big, tactile, and inviting. Richard Hartley’s score gives the film a romantic, serial-like lift, and Tanya Roberts sells the title role with a physical presence that makes the character feel like she belongs in this landscape, with Ted Wass providing an easygoing, human counterweight. It’s undeniably a product of its era—cheesy in spots and not shy about sensuality—but if you’re in the mood for a spirited, escapist jungle romp, it’s hard not to be won over.

Sheena wants to be a pulpy, comic-book jungle fantasy where a mystical heroine outsmarts mercenaries with animal allies and sheer charisma, and on paper that’s a perfectly fun Saturday-afternoon idea. In practice, the dialogue is often clunky, the acting and romance land more awkward than sweeping, and the pacing lurches between “things happening” and “waiting for the next set piece,” which makes the whole adventure feel cheaper than it should. If you’re hoping for a tight action film, convincing world-building, or anything remotely grounded, this will test your patience fast. But if you can enjoy it as colorful, campy ’80s escapism with a few memorable animal-driven moments and a lead who commits to the bit, it can still work as guilty-pleasure viewing.
