Romancing the Stone (1984)
Though she can spin wild tales of passionate romance, novelist Joan Wilder has no life of her own. Then one day adventure comes her way in the form of a mysterious package. It turns out that the parcel is the ransom she'll need to free her abducted sister, so Joan flies to South America to hand it over. But she gets on the wrong bus and winds up hopelessly stranded in the jungle.
What people think about Romancing the Stone
Romancing the Stone is that rare crowd-pleaser that actually earns its charm: a romantic comedy that barrels into a swashbuckling adventure without ever losing its wit or its heartbeat. Robert Zemeckis keeps the pace buoyant and bright, and the movie’s secret weapon is the effortless chemistry between Kathleen Turner’s smart, flustered heroine and Michael Douglas’s roguish guide—two stars who make every bicker, glance, and narrow escape feel like part of the same delicious ride. Danny DeVito adds a perfectly tuned dose of comic chaos, while the script keeps tossing out surprises with the confidence of a classic Saturday-night movie. It’s a little dated in spots and does include some PG-era rough edges (innuendo, peril, and a troubling early moment), but if you want a funny, fizzy, genuinely romantic adventure, this is a gem worth chasing.
Romancing the Stone is trying to be a breezy, old-school mashup of romance novel fantasy and jungle adventure, and when it’s in that playful groove it’s genuinely fun. But the plot is basically a clothesline for chases and set pieces, so if you need airtight logic, satisfying character growth, or a romance that feels deeply earned, you may find it a bit formulaic and thin. It also carries some dated stereotypes and a few PG moments that are more intense than the rating suggests, including sexual threat and violence. If you’re in the mood for a charming, fast-moving ’80s romp with charismatic stars and a light touch, it delivers; if you want modern pacing and nuance, this might test your patience.
