Phenomena (1985)

Phenomena is the kind of horror-thriller that feels like a fever dream you can’t look away from: Dario Argento turns a Swiss boarding school and its surrounding forests into a glittering nightmare of color, shadow, and surreal beauty. Jennifer Connelly anchors the film with a cool, determined presence, making the story’s strangest turns feel oddly believable, while Goblin’s propulsive score (and the era’s unmistakable 80s pulse) keeps the whole experience humming with stylish menace. It’s packed with tactile, old-school practical effects that give the scares a physical bite, not just a jump. If you like your horror elegant, eccentric, and unapologetically heightened rather than grounded and realistic, this is a must-see.

Phenomena is clearly trying to be a dreamy, off-kilter giallo-meets-supernatural mystery, with Argento leaning hard into mood, weird imagery, and the novelty of a heroine who can “work” with insects. The problem is it often feels like several cool ideas stitched together without a clean spine, so the plot can get muddied and the pacing drifts into dull stretches where you’re waiting for the movie to remember what it’s doing. The heavy metal needle-drops will either feel like bold, anarchic flavor or like a distraction that undercuts tension at the worst moments.
