What people think about Ordeal by Innocence
Ordeal by Innocence is the kind of old-school mystery that doesn’t just ask “who did it?”—it asks what happens to a family when the truth arrives too late, and it savors every uneasy silence along the way. The atmosphere is thick with suspicion, the production design feels handsomely lived-in, and the cinematography turns country-house elegance into something faintly menacing. Anchored by Donald Sutherland’s quietly relentless investigator and a cast that includes the formidable Christopher Plummer, the film lets Agatha Christie’s ingenious clockwork plotting unfold with patient, satisfying precision. It’s not for viewers craving breakneck action, but if you want a classy, chilly thriller that tightens its grip scene by scene, this one is a treat.
Ordeal by Innocence is clearly aiming for that classic Agatha Christie setup: a closed-off family, a late-arriving truth, and a methodical unraveling of who really did it. The problem is the film’s direction often feels plodding and oddly confusing, with characters that don’t get enough sharp definition to make the accusations and reveals land with much punch. And yes, the jazzy soundtrack is a baffling choice—it keeps tugging you out of the tension instead of building it, which is basically the opposite of what a mystery thriller needs. If you’re expecting tight suspense and crisp storytelling, this may test your patience, but if you’re a Christie completist or you enjoy moody, talky whodunits even when they’re a bit muddled, you might still find something to chew on.
