Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
After arriving in India, Indiana Jones is asked by a desperate village to find a mystical stone. He agrees – and stumbles upon a secret cult plotting a terrible plan in the catacombs of an ancient palace.
What people think about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is Spielberg in full roller-coaster mode: a breathless, wildly imaginative adventure that keeps topping itself with one audacious set piece after another. Harrison Ford’s Indy is as charismatic as ever, but the movie’s real spark comes from its pulpy, serial-chapter momentum and the lively chemistry of the trio, especially Ke Huy Quan’s scene-stealing Short Round. The vibe is darker and more feverish than Raiders—more haunted-palace thrills than globe-trotting mystery—which makes the escapism feel a little more dangerous and delicious. It’s not for everyone if you’re sensitive to intense, occasionally gruesome PG-era violence, but if you want pure, high-energy cinematic spectacle, this one delivers like a runaway mine cart.
Temple of Doom is Spielberg and Lucas trying to crank the Indy formula into a louder, darker rollercoaster—more pulp horror, more slapstick, more nonstop momentum. When it works, it’s got terrific set pieces, Harrison Ford’s rugged charm, and Ke Huy Quan is an absolute scene-stealer who adds real heart and energy. But the tone swings wildly from gruesome and mean-spirited to cartoonish, and the violence (especially involving kids) is intense enough to catch many viewers off guard for a PG-era adventure. If you want the breezy, crowd-pleasing charm of Raiders or Last Crusade, this one may feel like the awkward, edgy middle child—still entertaining, just not always in a way everyone will enjoy.
