Hardbodies (1984)
Three middle-aged daddies visit California to have a marvelous time at the beach. When they learn that a nice apartment and an expensive cabriolet isn't enough for them to score with the chicks, they employ a student to help them. At first he's as disgusted of them and his job as his girlfriend, but soon they find out how to use the situation to everyone's benefit.
What people think about Hardbodies
Hardbodies is a time capsule of sun-bleached ’80s beach comedy, the kind that knows exactly what it is: breezy, shameless, and oddly sweet when you least expect it. The setup—three well-heeled, middle-aged guys hiring a young hustler to teach them “the game”—plays like a goofy mentorship romp, but it’s the movie’s laid-back vibe and surprising little undercurrent of self-awareness that keep it from feeling totally empty. Grant Cramer gives the lead a charmingly slippery energy, and the film’s easygoing California atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting, like you’re watching a postcard that learned how to talk back. It’s not for everyone—if you’re allergic to dated sex-comedy attitudes and lots of ogling, you’ll roll your eyes—but if you want a light, low-stakes, nostalgia-forward romp with a few genuine heartbeats beneath the tan lines, it delivers.
Hardbodies is trying to be a sunny, beachy 80s sex comedy with a mild “player learns a lesson” arc, built around three older guys getting coached on how to meet women. The problem is it mostly plays like a bargain-bin excuse for ogling and crude gags, with thin characters and jokes that feel more sleazy than clever, so if you’re hoping for sharp comedy or anything resembling charm, you may be rolling your eyes a lot. There is a straightforward romance thread and a bit of nostalgic SoCal vibe, but it’s not enough to disguise how cheap and dated the whole thing feels. If you like shameless, plot-light raunch and can treat it as background party fodder, you might tolerate it; if you want wit, warmth, or a comedy that respects your time, skip it.
