Angel (1984)

Angel is one of those disreputable, neon-lit ’80s thrillers that shouldn’t work as well as it does—and that’s exactly its strange magic: it plays like a gritty Hollywood Boulevard fever dream with a pulpy heartbeat and an unexpectedly tender sense of community among society’s castoffs. Director Robert Vincent O’Neil turns sleaze into atmosphere, using real locations and a scrappy, street-level energy that makes the danger feel immediate, while the supporting cast (especially Susan Tyrrell and the wonderfully off-kilter Dick Shawn) gives the film a lived-in humanity amid the grime. It’s lurid, fast, and shamelessly sensational, but also oddly sincere about the makeshift family at its center, which is why it sticks with you longer than you’d expect. Fair warning: the content is very R-rated and the tone is unapologetically exploitation-adjacent, but if you can meet it on its own grindhouse terms, it’s a nasty little time capsule that’s hard not to watch all the way through.

Angel is clearly trying to mash up a gritty street-level crime thriller with a pulpy coming-of-age survival story, and you can feel the filmmakers aiming for shock, danger, and a weird kind of found-family warmth. The problem is the execution: the suspense is thin, the atmosphere is more sleazy-’80s exploitation than genuinely tense, and the plot often trudges along with a cheesy tone that can undercut the darker material. If you’re looking for a tight serial-killer thriller or anything resembling realism in how it handles its underage premise, this will likely feel uncomfortable and frustrating rather than gripping. That said, the supporting cast brings some offbeat personality and the Hollywood Blvd “street family” angle has a scrappy charm—just don’t expect finesse, subtlety, or restraint.
