Yentl is clearly trying to be a sweeping, heartfelt statement about a woman fighting for intellectual and spiritual freedom, wrapped in old-world romance and musical introspection. The problem is that Streisand’s passion sometimes tips into self-serious grandness, and the pacing can feel heavy once the love triangle and marriage complications start looping rather than escalating. The songs and score have moments of beauty, but if you’re expecting a lively, hummable musical or a briskly told drama, you may find it surprisingly static and a bit self-indulgent.
