Winners & Sinners (1983)
Five friends are released from prison and do their best to stay out trouble. While trying to mind their own business (and run their 5-Star Cleaning Service), they are caught up in a war between rival Triad gangs fighting for control of the counterfeit currency market.
What people think about Winners & Sinners
Winners and Sinners is the kind of Hong Kong crowd-pleaser that feels like a perfectly timed juggling act: big-hearted comedy, bruising action, and stunt work so lively you can practically hear the audience cheering between punches. Sammo Hung directs with a showman’s rhythm, letting a charismatic ensemble of lovable screwups bounce from one mishap to the next, turning a simple “let’s go straight” premise into a gleeful collision of slapstick and street-level crime chaos. The vibe is rowdy and playful, but when it’s time for the fights, it snaps into crisp, inventive choreography that reminds you why this era became legendary. If you’re allergic to broad humor or the anything-goes energy of classic martial arts comedies, it may not be your flavor—but if you want a hilarious, action-packed ride with real stunt artistry, this one earns its reputation.
Winners and Sinners is trying to be a rowdy Hong Kong ensemble romp—part buddy comedy, part crime caper, with bursts of action when the Triad trouble finally catches up. The problem is it often feels like a string of loosely connected gags and set pieces rather than a plot that builds, and the humor is broad, silly, and very much of its era, which won’t land for everyone. Also, if you’re coming for Jackie Chan, manage your expectations: he’s more of a welcome cameo than a true co-lead. Still, if you like chaotic group energy, slapstick, and don’t mind a messy story in exchange for a few fun action beats, it can be an easy, undemanding watch.
