WarGames is that rare thriller that’s both a cracking good time and quietly prophetic, turning the glow of a computer screen into the most nerve-racking kind of suspense. John Badham directs with a brisk, confident hand, letting the tension build through smart details and razor-tight pacing, while Matthew Broderick gives the story an irresistible teenage charm that makes the danger feel even more immediate. The vibe is part Cold War nail-biter, part geeky wish-fulfillment, and part cautionary tale about what happens when we hand our worst decisions over to machines. It’s not for everyone if you can’t enjoy early-’80s tech aesthetics and a few dated teen moments, but if you want an intelligent, inventive ride that still feels uncomfortably relevant, this is the one to play.

WarGames is aiming to turn early computer-hacking anxiety into a high-stakes nuclear thriller, and when it’s in “teen stumbles into something huge” mode, it’s genuinely tense and oddly plausible for its era. The problem is that as the plot escalates, the logic starts to wobble: adults make conveniently dumb decisions, the tech and procedure get hand-waved, and the seriousness sometimes clashes with moments that feel a bit too cute. If you need airtight realism or modern cyber authenticity, this will likely feel dated and occasionally silly in hindsight. But if you can accept it as a smart, accessible cautionary tale with a strong central performance and a memorable concept, it’s still an entertaining watch.
