Under Fire (1983)
Three U.S. journalists get too close to one another and their work in 1979 Nicaragua.
What people think about Under Fire
Under Fire is special because it turns a war story into a pulse-quickening moral pressure cooker about what it means to witness history and what it costs to report it honestly. Roger Spottiswoode shoots Nicaragua with a lived-in immediacy—the dust, the heat, the sudden eruptions of danger—while letting the tension come as much from conscience and loyalty as from gunfire. Nick Nolte brings weary integrity, Gene Hackman supplies charismatic bite, and Joanna Cassidy anchors the film’s emotional center, making the journalists’ closeness feel both intoxicating and perilous. It’s not for viewers looking for a clean, comforting take on heroism, but if you want a smart, gripping drama that respects your intelligence and keeps you on edge, this one still hits hard.
Under Fire is clearly aiming for a gritty, morally tangled look at journalism in a real revolution, mixing battlefield urgency with a messy triangle between three reporters. The problem is it can feel confused about what it wants to be: a political thriller, a romance, or a meditation on objectivity, and the script sometimes uses the Nicaraguan conflict more as dramatic wallpaper than as something it truly grapples with. If you’re hoping for a sharp, politically grounded war film or a coherent newsroom procedural, you may find the emotional beats manipulative and the ethical questions oddly unbalanced. Still, the performances (especially Nolte and Hackman) and the on-the-ground tension give it bite, so it’s best suited to viewers who can accept a flawed, character-first drama set against very serious real-world violence.
