Uncommon Valor (1983)
A group of Vietnam War veterans re-unite to rescue one of their own left behind and taken prisoner by the Vietnamese.
What people think about Uncommon Valor
Uncommon Valor earns its title by treating a gung-ho rescue premise with something rarer than firepower: genuine feeling. Gene Hackman gives the film its pulse, playing a father whose stubborn love turns into a mission, and Ted Kotcheff stages the buildup with a craftsman’s patience before unleashing taut, clearly shot action that lets you feel the terrain, the sweat, and the stakes. The vibe is gritty and earnest rather than glossy—part men-on-a-job camaraderie, part haunted postwar reckoning—so the explosions land because the people do. If you’re allergic to ’80s war-movie muscle or familiar genre beats, it may feel of its time, but if you want a solid, well-photographed Vietnam-era thriller with heart and real momentum, this one delivers.
Uncommon Valor is clearly trying to turn real post-Vietnam grief and unresolved POW anxiety into a rousing, boots-on-the-ground rescue story, and you can feel the sincerity behind that aim. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of tough-guy speeches and familiar action beats, smoothing a complicated subject into wish-fulfillment that may come off as blunt or even a bit jingoistic. If you want nuanced politics, fresh storytelling, or a deeply reflective war drama, this will likely irritate you more than it moves you. That said, Gene Hackman sells the father’s desperation, the camaraderie has some grit, and the training/mission sections deliver solid, old-school action if you’re in the mood for a straightforward 80s war adventure.
