Strange Brew (1983)

Strange Brew is the kind of comedy that feels like it was smuggled out of a late-night sketch show and carbonated into a feature: loose, lovable, and cheerfully ridiculous in the best way. Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas turn Bob and Doug McKenzie into two dim-but-decent heroes whose deadpan Canadian charm carries you through a plot that gleefully mashes together brewery intrigue, sci‑fi mind control, and hockey-fueled mayhem. Max von Sydow plays it deliciously straight, giving the madness a sturdy villainous spine while the movie keeps tossing out surreal, offhand gags like they’re nothing. If you need tight storytelling or polished satire, this may feel shaggy, but if you’re on the fence and want a warm, zany cult comedy that’s more about the laughs and the vibe than the logic, it’s an easy yes.

Strange Brew is trying to stretch the Bob-and-Doug SCTV shtick into a full-blown, Hamlet-ish brewery conspiracy with goofy sci-fi mind control and hockey chaos, and you can feel the filmmakers having fun. The problem is it’s basically a string of sketches wearing a plot, so if you’re not already charmed by the McKenzie brothers’ rambling idiot-poet energy, the movie can feel thin, rough, and oddly aimless. The comedy is hit-and-miss and the story wanders like it’s making it up on the walk to the next gag, which will either feel endearing or like a waste of your evening. Still, Moranis and Thomas have committed chemistry, Max von Sydow plays it straight with just enough menace, and if you want a low-stakes, beer-soaked time capsule of Canadian absurdism, it delivers that much.
