Star 80 (1983)
Paul Snider is a narcissistic, small time hustler who fancies himself a ladies man. His life changes when he meets Dorothy Stratten working behind the counter of a Dairy Queen. Under his guidance Dorothy grows to fame as a Playboy Playmate. But when Dorothy begins pursuing an acting career, the jealous Paul finds himself elbowed out of the picture by more famous men.
What people think about Star 80
Star 80 is the kind of drama that grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go, not through sensationalism, but through the chilly clarity of its storytelling and two performances that feel almost dangerously alive. Eric Roberts is mesmerizing as Paul Snider—charismatic, pathetic, and terrifying in the way real narcissists can be—while Mariel Hemingway gives Dorothy Stratten a quiet radiance that makes her more than a headline or a symbol. The film’s vibe is unglamorous and unsettling, a hard look at ambition, control, and the machinery around fame that can chew people up, and it earns its impact by feeling painfully plausible. It’s not an easy watch, and it’s certainly not “fun,” but if you’re on the fence and want a powerful, well-made film that stays with you, this one is worth the discomfort.
Star 80 is aiming for a grim, cautionary true-crime drama about control, fame, and the way a charismatic predator can disguise himself as a “mentor.” It’s well-acted and sharply observed, but it’s also relentlessly unpleasant—sleazy in texture, bleak in worldview, and often feels like it’s lingering on exploitation even as it condemns it. If you need a sense of justice, catharsis, or a clear moral center to make dark material feel worthwhile, this may come off as punishing and emotionally draining. Watch it only if you can handle a cold, nihilistic approach that prioritizes discomfort over uplift, because that’s the point—and it won’t soften the blow.
