Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Years after a terrible boating accident, Angela is sent to Camp Arawak where a series of bizarre and violent "accidents" begin to claim the lives of various campers.
What people think about Sleepaway Camp
Sleepaway Camp is the rare ’80s slasher that doesn’t just go through the motions—it feels like a sun-bleached postcard from summer camp that’s been scribbled on by someone delightfully unhinged. Beneath the familiar cabins-and-counselors setup, it has an off-kilter, almost midnight-movie weirdness that keeps you leaning in, never quite sure if you should laugh, wince, or both, and that unpredictability is exactly its hook. The kills are nasty, the vibe is mean in that era-specific way, and the movie’s commitment to its own oddball tone makes it far more memorable than a dozen slicker copycats. It’s not for everyone—there’s bullying, sleaze, and some genuinely upsetting material—but if you can handle grimy exploitation edges, you’ll see why this one became a cult staple people can’t stop talking about.
Sleepaway Camp is clearly aiming for a sleazy summer-camp slasher with a mean streak, piling on bullying, creepy adults, and “accidents” that escalate into outright carnage. The problem is the execution: the editing and staging can feel clunky, the effects are often bargain-bin, and the movie leans on a nasty, snickering sense of humor that will either read as grimly campy or just plain tasteless. It’s also loaded with upsetting material (including sexual threat and violence involving kids), so if you want your horror fun rather than queasy, this is not your night. That said, if you can tolerate rough craftsmanship and you’re hunting for an infamous, conversation-starting ’80s oddity with a committed vibe and a couple of memorably unpleasant moments, it does deliver that specific kind of cult-slasher grime.
