Scrubbers (1982)
Inmates fight, pair off, try suicide and attempt escape at a British reform school for girls.
What people think about Scrubbers
Scrubbers is special because it looks straight at a world most films either sensationalize or sentimentalize, and instead finds the bruised, stubborn humanity inside it. Mai Zetterling directs with a clear-eyed compassion that never excuses the girls’ violence or desperation, but refuses to reduce them to “cases,” letting their loyalties, rivalries, and sudden tenderness feel startlingly real. The performances—especially from Amanda York and Chrissie Cotterill—have that raw, lived-in conviction that makes every glance and outburst carry weight, giving the film a rough, intimate vibe rather than a tidy message. It’s a tough watch at times, with R-rated material and emotional bleakness, but if you can handle its intensity, it rewards you with characters who linger like people you’ve actually met.
Scrubbers is clearly aiming for a gritty, female-focused look at power, sexuality, and survival inside a British borstal, and Mai Zetterling brings a blunt, unglamorous eye to the setting. The problem is that a lot of the drama plays like familiar prison-movie beats—pairings, bullying, solitary, revenge—stacked in a way that can feel more soap-operatic than illuminating, with characters sometimes pushed into simplistic roles rather than allowed real complexity. It’s also heavy going, with violence and self-harm themes that aren’t handled with much nuance, so if you’re hoping for insight or originality, you may come away frustrated. Still, if you can tolerate rough edges and want an unsentimental, confrontational 80s British drama with flashes of intensity, there’s enough raw atmosphere and committed performances to keep you watching.
