The Right Stuff (1983)

What makes The Right Stuff special is how it turns the early Space Race into a human-scale epic—part swaggering adventure, part wry satire, part awe-struck hymn to courage—without ever forgetting the cost of chasing the sky. Philip Kaufman directs with a novelist’s curiosity and a showman’s sense of spectacle, letting the roar of engines, the vast desert horizons, and Bill Conti’s soaring score carry you into a world where bravery is equal parts skill, ego, and stubborn endurance. Sam Shepard’s laconic Chuck Yeager and the Mercury astronauts (with terrific work from Ed Harris and Scott Glenn) feel less like statues in a textbook and more like complicated men caught between danger, fame, and history’s spotlight. It’s long and unhurried, and if you need nonstop action you may feel the sprawl—but if you want a smart, thrilling, unexpectedly funny film that makes heroism feel earned, it’s one of American cinema’s great rides.

The Right Stuff is aiming for a big, myth-making portrait of America’s early Space Race—part adventure, part satire, part character study—and when it clicks, it’s thrilling and strangely funny. But it’s long, deliberately paced, and more interested in the culture, ego, and bureaucracy around the missions than in nonstop rocket-launch excitement, so if you want a tight, plot-driven space thriller, this can feel like a handsome endurance test. It also takes some liberties with history and characterization, which may bug you if you’re coming in for strict accuracy or a more even-handed take on certain figures. If you’re patient with sprawling storytelling, you’ll get terrific performances, memorable set pieces, and a real sense of danger; if not, you may admire it more than you enjoy it.
