Jaws 3-D (1983)

Jaws 3-D is the rare sequel that knows exactly what it is: a sun-drenched, crowd-pleasing creature feature that turns SeaWorld into a glossy, glass-and-water pressure cooker and invites you to enjoy the ride. Joe Alves shoots the park like a playground with teeth—bright, clean photography up top, eerie blues below—while the sound design and underwater staging do a lot of heavy lifting to keep the suspense humming even when the dialogue gets cheerfully corny. The 3-D is very much of its era, sometimes gimmicky, sometimes surprisingly effective, but it adds a theme-park immediacy that fits the setting like a wet suit. If you want the first film’s dread and gravitas, this isn’t that; if you’re in the mood for a fun, pulpy shark thrill with memorable set pieces and a big-screen “hot afternoon” vibe, it’s an easy yes.

Jaws 3-D is clearly trying to bottle the original’s “shark in a contained space” tension and turn it into a big, crowd-pleasing theme-park disaster ride, with Dennis Quaid doing his best to lend it some likability. The problem is the movie leans hard on its 3-D gimmicks and rubbery shark effects, which undercut the suspense and make a lot of the danger feel more like a cheesy attraction than a thriller. The pacing can be oddly flat between attacks, and the characters are mostly there to move you from set piece to set piece rather than pull you in emotionally. If you want a genuinely scary Jaws follow-up, this will likely disappoint, but if you enjoy campy ’80s creature features and can laugh along with the silliness, it has a few fun moments and some memorable SeaWorld mayhem.
