Cujo (1983)

Cujo turns an everyday, almost wholesome image—a big, friendly family dog—into a nightmare you can practically feel on your skin, and that plausibility is exactly what makes it so unnerving. Lewis Teague stages the horror with a gritty, sunbaked realism, squeezing relentless tension out of small spaces and bad luck rather than gothic shadows or supernatural tricks. Dee Wallace is terrific as a mother forced into raw, moment-to-moment survival, and Danny Pintauro matches her with a performance that makes the danger feel heartbreakingly immediate. It’s a tough watch if you’re sensitive to animal-related horror or intense peril involving a child, but if you want a lean, suspense-driven thriller that earns every spike of fear, this one still bites.

Cujo is clearly aiming for stripped-down, survival horror: take an everyday “good dog,” add rabies, and squeeze maximum tension out of a hot, hopeless situation. When it works, it’s nasty in a grounded way, with Dee Wallace doing real, committed panic and a few genuinely stressful stretches that tap into primal fear. But a lot of the movie feels thinly padded, with soapier side drama and stretches where the menace isn’t staged sharply enough to keep the dread consistently high, so it can come off dull and predictable if you’re expecting escalating set pieces. If you don’t like animal-attack stories, can’t handle a child in prolonged danger, or need smarter character writing to stay invested, this one may feel more exhausting than exciting.
