The Champions (1983)

Brandy Yuen Jan-Yeung lets Yuen Biao’s athleticism do the talking, turning football practices, street scuffles, and petty rivalries into spring-loaded set pieces where every kick, flip, and tumble lands with a grin. The vibe is rowdy and crowd-pleasing, but there’s a satisfying edge underneath as it pokes at bullying, jealousy, and the small corruptions that turn competition sour. If you’re not into old-school Hong Kong physical comedy and stunt-driven storytelling, it may feel lightweight, but if you are, it’s a brisk, high-spirited showcase of craft and energy that’s hard to resist.

The problem is the movie treats plot and acting like optional extras, so if you need strong character work or a story that actually builds tension, you’ll feel it sag. Even the big payoff match has a scrappy, low-stakes look thanks to its sand-lot setting, which can make the finale feel smaller than the film wants it to be. Still, if you’re mainly here for nimble stunt work, broad humor, and a breezy 80s Hong Kong vibe, it delivers enough energy to pass the time.
