Zapped! (1982)

Zapped! is the kind of scrappy, candy-colored early-’80s teen comedy that knows exactly what it is: a breezy, mischievous wish-fulfillment romp where a shy science kid stumbles into telekinesis and promptly treats high school like his personal pinball machine. The pleasure isn’t in surprises so much as in the playful escalation—pranks, parties, and adolescent chaos—delivered with an easygoing charm that makes it a perfect “late-night, don’t-overthink-it” watch. Scott Baio and Willie Aames give it that sitcom-friendly buddy energy, and the movie’s goofy special effects and schoolyard vibe land like a time capsule from a simpler, louder era of comedies. Fair warning, it’s definitely dated and leans hard into the R-rated, male-gaze sensibilities of its time, but if you can meet it where it is, it’s a surprisingly watchable guilty pleasure with a nostalgic kick.

Zapped! wants to be a goofy teen fantasy where a nerdy kid’s accidental telekinesis turns high school life into one long prank, and on that basic level it delivers quick, silly wish-fulfillment. The problem is it mostly cashes that premise in for cheap, horny gags and crude set pieces rather than clever escalation or characters you can actually root for, so the comedy can feel strained and juvenile instead of sharp. It’s also very much an early-’80s “sex comedy” with frequent nudity and sleazy energy that isn’t played as satire, so if you’re expecting a light PG-style romp or a smarter sci‑fi twist, this will likely annoy you. If you can tolerate dated attitudes and just want Scott Baio/Willie Aames-era nostalgia with a few mildly amusing telekinesis bits, you might get a passable late-night watch, but go in with your expectations on the floor.
