Frances (1982)

Frances is the kind of biographical drama that feels less like a history lesson and more like a raw, urgent reckoning with what fame can cost when a fiercely independent woman refuses to be managed. Jessica Lange gives a performance of astonishing force and tenderness, letting Frances Farmer be brilliant, funny, self-destructive, and heartbreakingly human without ever sanding down her edges, while the period detail and studio-era atmosphere quietly tighten the screws. The film’s vibe is intense and unglamorous—serious, sometimes furious, and always empathetic—building a sense of inevitability even as you keep hoping she’ll find a way through. It’s not an easy watch, and the institutional material can be harrowing, but if you’re on the fence and want a drama that means something and lingers long after the credits, this one earns your time.
