First Blood (1982)

Sylvester Stallone gives one of his most compelling performances, mostly quiet and watchful, and the film’s intelligence lies in how it lets the thrills land without ever forgetting the wounds that fuel them. If you’re expecting a glossy, quippy ’80s shoot-’em-up, this is rougher, sadder, and more grounded—but that’s exactly why it hits so hard.

First Blood is aiming for more than a shoot-’em-up—it’s a tense manhunt that tries to say something pointed about how a damaged veteran is treated when he comes home. When it works, it’s lean, gritty, and surprisingly grounded, with Stallone giving a more vulnerable performance than his reputation suggests and Dennehy making the small-town authority clash feel uncomfortably real. But if you’re allergic to messages that land with a bit of a thud, or you want nonstop momentum, the film can feel heavy-handed and occasionally drags between bursts of action. And if you’re expecting a perfectly satisfying wrap-up, the ending may strike you as blunt or less effective than the build-up.
