Deadly Eyes (1982)

Deadly Eyes is the kind of gloriously disreputable creature feature that reminds you why midnight movies exist: it commits to its premise with straight-faced sincerity and then gleefully lets the mayhem spill all over Toronto. The vibe is scrappy, grimy, and proudly over-the-top, with crunchy practical gore, tense “something’s in the shadows” suspense, and a wonderfully inventive solution to bringing its mutant menace to life that’s become the stuff of cult legend. It’s not polished and it’s certainly not subtle, but it’s consistently entertaining in that special schlocky way where every scene seems determined to top the last. If you can meet it on its own B-movie wavelength, you’ll get a fast, funny, and surprisingly memorable slice of early-’80s horror-sci-fi.

Deadly Eyes is clearly aiming for that grimy early-’80s creature-feature vibe: mutant rats, civic panic, and a race to stop a subway opening from turning into a buffet. The problem is the execution—plot threads wander, the dialogue lands with a thud, and the performances rarely sell the urgency, so the “thriller” part feels more tedious than tense. And yes, the infamous “rats” (often dogs in costumes) are either a charmingly ridiculous practical workaround or an instant mood-killer, depending on your tolerance for camp. If you want serious scares or slick sci-fi, skip it; if you enjoy bargain-bin horror with accidental comedy and a scrappy Canadian grindhouse energy, you might get a few guilty laughs out of it.
