Creepshow (1982)

Creepshow is a love letter to those lurid, deliciously nasty 1950s horror comics, brought to life with pop-art colors, punchy framing, and the kind of giddy storytelling confidence that makes each tale feel like a wicked page-turner. George A. Romero directs with a showman’s swagger, letting the humor land right alongside the shocks, so the movie plays like a carnival ride where the punchlines are sometimes made of teeth. Creepshow is clearly trying to be a loving, candy-colored tribute to old EC horror comics, with Romero leaning into pulpy morals, punchline endings, and deliberately exaggerated performances. The catch is that anthologies live or die by consistency, and this one is uneven—some segments pop with nasty fun, while others feel thin, obvious, or like they’re stretching a simple gag past its welcome. If you want genuinely scary horror or sharp satire, the knowingly “arch” tone and broad character types may leave you cold, and the effects-heavy gross-outs can feel more cartoonish than tense.
