Love Strange Love (1982)

Love Strange Love is one of those rare historical dramas that feels like a fevered confession—elegant, unsettling, and strangely hypnotic—using a single mansion as a whole country’s moral pressure cooker on the eve of political upheaval. Walter Hugo Khouri approaches incendiary material with a cool, literary poise, letting atmosphere, glances, and silence do as much work as dialogue, while Vera Fischer and Tarcísio Meira embody a world where power and desire share the same locked doors. The film’s pull is less about titillation than about the way memory curdles into myth, capturing how innocence can be shaped, scarred, and weaponized by adults who think they’re in control. It’s absorbing and thoughtfully made, but it is absolutely not for everyone: the sexual content involving a child and the taboo at its center are explicit and will be a dealbreaker for many viewers, even as the movie insists on being taken seriously rather than consumed casually.

Love Strange Love is aiming for a moody, memory-driven portrait of a boy’s “coming of age” set against the rot of pre-coup Brazilian politics, using a brothel as its pressure-cooker setting. The problem is that its shocking sexual material involving a child—including incest—doesn’t feel like a thoughtful critique so much as provocation, and the political angle often plays like background noise rather than a coherent spine. If you’re looking for a serious historical drama or an erotic thriller with clear storytelling, you may find it sluggish, uneven, and more unsettling than insightful. That said, Khouri can create a suffocating atmosphere and the period setting has a lurid, dreamlike pull—just don’t mistake that for an easy or “important” watch.
