True Confessions (1981)
A cop clashes with his priest brother while investigating the brutal murder of a young prostitute.
What people think about True Confessions
True Confessions is one of those grown-up American crime dramas that feels almost lost to time: patient, morally thorny, and powered by two actors working at the top of their intelligence. Robert Duvall’s hard-nosed detective and Robert De Niro’s ambitious priest don’t just trade arguments—they circle each other like family members who know exactly where the bruises are, and the film turns that tension into something quietly devastating. Ulu Grosbard gives Los Angeles a smoky, postwar noir atmosphere without leaning on gimmicks, letting the corruption seep in through church banquets, police interviews, and backroom favors until you can feel the walls closing. It does deal with prostitution, exploitation, and some unsettling imagery, so it’s not a comfort watch, but if you want a serious, beautifully acted drama that respects your attention and leaves you thinking, this one delivers.
True Confessions wants to be a gritty, morally tangled noir about faith, family, and institutional rot in postwar L.A., and you can feel the ambition in its atmosphere and big, adult themes. The problem is it plays like a handful of terrific scenes and performances that never quite lock into a satisfying whole, so the investigation and the brother-versus-brother drama can feel uneven and occasionally unfocused. De Niro’s priest is also a sticking point for some viewers—more “actor doing priest” than fully inhabited—while Duvall brings the steadier, lived-in credibility. If you’re here for a tight, cleanly resolved crime story, the ending may leave you cold, but if you can tolerate some messiness for strong character moments and a grimy period mood, there’s still value in the ride.
