Roar (1981)
Roar follows a family who are attacked by various African animals at the secluded home of their keeper.
What people think about Roar
Roar is special because it isn’t “realistic” animal peril—it’s the real thing, captured with a kind of wide-eyed audacity that modern movies would never be allowed to attempt. The tone ricochets between adventure, slapstick chaos, and genuine white-knuckle dread as big cats and humans share the same space, and you can feel the film’s insanity in every unscripted moment. It’s messy, it’s strange, and the story often seems to exist mainly to get you to the next jaw-dropping encounter, but that’s also the point: you’re watching a spectacle that’s as unforgettable as it is unbelievable. If you want polished craft, this may not be your movie; if you want a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic dare, Roar delivers.
Roar is clearly trying to be a wild, one-of-a-kind “you can’t believe they filmed this” adventure-comedy with real big cats and a family-in-peril setup, and on that level it does deliver sheer chaos. The problem is it barely functions as a movie: the plot is thin to nonexistent, the acting can’t compete with the nonstop animal mayhem, and scenes often feel like stitched-together accidents rather than storytelling. The bigger hurdle is ethical—knowing how dangerously and irresponsibly it was made (with real injuries) can make the tension feel less entertaining and more uncomfortable. If you want coherent thrills or polished filmmaking, skip it; if you’re morbidly curious about a notorious cinematic trainwreck and can stomach the discomfort, it’s an unforgettable watch for all the wrong reasons.
