Piranha II: The Spawning (1982)
A scuba diving instructor, her biochemist boyfriend, and her police chief ex-husband try to link a series of bizarre deaths to a mutant strain of piranha fish whose lair is a sunken freighter ship off a Caribbean island resort.
What people think about Piranha II: The Spawning
Piranha II: The Spawning is the kind of gloriously unhinged creature feature that earns its place in midnight-movie history on sheer nerve: it takes a simple “vacation goes wrong” setup and then gives the monsters wings. There’s a scrappy, kinetic energy to it—part Caribbean resort postcard, part wet-and-wild panic—where the fun comes from how earnestly it plays its outrageous premise while still delivering real B-movie shocks and splattery mayhem. It’s also a fascinating early stop on James Cameron’s road to bigger things, with flashes of his knack for action staging peeking through the chaos. This isn’t for viewers who want polished horror or subtlety (and it does include brief nudity and some nasty gore), but if you’re on the fence and crave campy, bizarre novelty with teeth, it’s a deliriously entertaining bite.
Piranha II: The Spawning is clearly trying to be a cheeky, tropical creature-feature that ups the B-movie ante by giving piranhas wings and staging big, chaotic set pieces around a resort. The problem is the execution: the writing is thin, the pacing lurches, and the low-rent effects and rough sound/image quality make it hard to stay invested unless you’re already in on the joke. It also leans into sleaze (including an explicit opening sex scene) and delivers plenty of gory, jumpy attacks, so it’s not exactly a cozy watch. If you love schlocky “so bad it’s good” horror or you’re curious about an early James Cameron credit, there’s some camp value to be had—but if you want competent scares or convincing monsters, this will likely feel like a waste of your time.
