The Great Muppet Caper (1981)

What makes The Great Muppet Caper special is how it turns a proper London whodunit into a joyful, self-aware romp where the jokes land with the snap of a great newspaper headline and the heart sneaks in right behind them. Jim Henson and company play the mystery straight enough to keep you curious, but they lace it with buoyant musical energy, sly dialogue, and that uniquely Muppet ability to break the rules of a scene without breaking its mood. Miss Piggy is in peak form—equal parts romantic heroine and comedic wrecking ball—while Kermit, Fozzie, and Gonzo keep the caper moving with charm that feels effortless. It’s a little busy and cheerfully overstuffed, so if you want a tight, serious crime story this isn’t it, but if you’re on the fence about spending 90 minutes laughing at a clever, warmhearted caper, this is an easy yes.

The Great Muppet Caper is clearly trying to mash up a light jewel-heist mystery with classic Muppet chaos, romance, and lots of self-aware silliness, and on that level it’s charmingly game. The problem is the story gets surprisingly busy and uneven, so if you’re hoping for a tight mystery or a consistently sharp comedy, it can feel like the plot is just an excuse to bounce between sketches. The songs are pleasant but fairly routine, more “nice padding” than must-hear showstoppers. If you love the Muppets’ personalities, quick gags, and London set dressing, you’ll have a good time; if you need a strong narrative backbone, this one may test your patience.
