Graduation Day (1981)

Graduation Day is the kind of scrappy, neon-lit early-’80s slasher that knows exactly what it is: a high-school nightmare with a pulsing disco heartbeat and a killer who turns gym-class anxiety into blood-slick spectacle. It’s less about polish than momentum, tossing you into a parade of quirky teens, suspicious adults, and cheerfully outrageous set pieces where the fencing mask becomes an instantly memorable calling card. The movie’s charm lives in its cheesy sincerity and its occasional flashes of genuinely nasty creativity, the sort of rough-edged fun that plays best when you’re in the mood to laugh, gasp, and keep watching anyway. Graduation Day is clearly trying to cash in on the early-’80s slasher wave by mixing high school drama with a masked-killer whodunit, and the setup has the right ingredients for cheesy fun. The problem is it rarely builds real tension: the pacing drags, the mystery feels obvious, and the characters are too thin (and the acting too shaky) to make the body count land.
