The problem is it can feel like John Boorman is more in love with the look and symbolism than with making the story clean, the characters nuanced, or the emotional beats land naturally, so if you need clarity and human-scale relationships, you may find it cold and muddled. It’s also unapologetically adult, with explicit sex and some nasty, lingering violence that can be a dealbreaker if you’re expecting swashbuckling fantasy fun. Still, if you can surrender to its mood, it delivers striking visuals, a committed Merlin, and a rare, serious attempt to treat Arthurian legend like tragic myth rather than adventure comfort food.
