Butterfly (1982)

Butterfly is the kind of disreputable, desert-baked melodrama that shouldn’t work—and yet it has a sticky, late-night-TV pull you can’t quite shake, like a scandalous paperback brought to life. Matt Cimber leans into a tawdry noir atmosphere where heat, loneliness, and bad decisions hang in the air, and Stacy Keach anchors the whole thing with a weary, grounded presence that keeps the movie from floating away on pure pulp. Pia Zadora plays the film’s dangerous catalyst with a provocative, unpredictable energy, and the supporting cast even includes an enjoyably imposing Orson Welles, lending a strange gravitas to the proceedings. It’s not for everyone—its taboo-tinged premise is deliberately lurid—but if you can meet it on its own sleazy, watchable wavelength, it’s a fascinating piece of trashy Americana that knows exactly what it’s doing.
