Bustin' Loose (1981)
After ex-con Joe Braxton violates his probation, he is given a second chance. All he has to do is drive a group of special kids across the country.
What people think about Bustin' Loose
Bustin’ Loose is the kind of warm-hearted road movie that sneaks up on you: it starts with Richard Pryor’s combustible comic energy and ends up revealing a surprisingly tender, good-natured spirit underneath the wisecracks. Pryor plays a screw-up given one last shot, and watching him spar with authority, bond with a busload of kids, and stumble into decency gives the film a likable, lived-in charm that modern comedies often forget to chase. The vibe is shaggy and rambling in the best way—more hangout journey than tightly engineered plot—with Cicely Tyson grounding the sweetness so it doesn’t float away. It’s not for everyone if you need polish or truly family-friendly language, but if you want a funny, humane ride powered by Pryor at full wattage, it’s easy to root for.
Bustin’ Loose is clearly aiming for a warm, crowd-pleasing road-trip dramedy where a rough-around-the-edges guy finds his heart while helping a group of kids, and Richard Pryor brings enough natural charm to make that premise work in spots. The problem is it often feels loosely stitched together, bouncing between broad comedy, earnest social issues, and feel-good speeches in a way that can come off more sentimental than satisfying. If you’re coming for Pryor at his sharpest and most subversive, you may find this one oddly softened and only intermittently funny, with the plot doing a lot of convenient heavy lifting. Still, if you can accept some dated attitudes, a bit of foul language, and a TV-movie-ish sincerity, there’s a gentle sweetness here that might land when you’re in the mood for something easy and uplifting rather than tight or edgy.
