What people think about Body Heat
Body Heat is the rare thriller that doesn’t just tell you it’s dangerous—it makes you feel it, like the air itself is conspiring against good judgment. Lawrence Kasdan turns a Florida heatwave into a sultry pressure cooker where desire, greed, and bad decisions slide together with the smooth inevitability of classic noir, only dressed in distinctly modern, erotic confidence. William Hurt’s slick, slightly seedy charm and Kathleen Turner’s star-making magnetism create a chemistry so convincing you’ll understand exactly why a smart person would do something catastrophically stupid. It’s glossy, wickedly plotted, and deliciously cynical, though if explicit sex or morally compromised characters aren’t your thing, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
Body Heat is clearly aiming to be a slick, sweaty throwback to classic film noir: lust, greed, bad decisions, and a Florida heatwave that’s basically another character. When it works, it’s stylish and shamelessly erotic, with a nasty little sense of inevitability and a star-making, coolly controlled presence from Kathleen Turner. But if you’re not in the mood for a deliberately familiar noir setup, the movie can feel like it’s running on atmosphere more than believable motivation, with a slow, hushed pace and dialogue that sometimes lands a bit flat. Also, the explicit sex and nudity aren’t window dressing—they’re central—so if that’s not your thing, this will feel less like a thriller and more like a prolonged seduction with a crime plot attached.
