Used Cars (1980)

Used Cars is the kind of comedy that feels like it’s running on pure gasoline and bad ideas, a gleefully low-down satire that turns American hustle into an art form. Robert Zemeckis stages the used-lot wars with the speed and showmanship of a carnival barker, and Kurt Russell is terrific as a fast-talking salesman whose charm is just this side of shameless, pulling you along even when you can’t believe what you’re watching. Used Cars is trying to be a loud, anything-goes satire of American greed, political ambition, and sleazy advertising, and you can feel Robert Zemeckis swinging for maximal chaos. The problem is that the movie often confuses “edgy” with “mean,” piling on dark gags and escalating schemes until it starts to feel more exhausting than clever, with a plot that keeps adding ideas instead of sharpening the best ones. If you don’t enjoy aggressive, snide farce with some gratuitous sexual bits and a generally cynical tone, this will likely grate rather than amuse.
