The Sea Wolves (1980)

The Sea Wolves has the kind of old-school, boots-on-the-deck craftsmanship you don’t see much anymore: a lean, confident wartime caper where the stakes are deadly and the solution is wonderfully unconventional. The Sea Wolves is clearly aiming for a classy, old-school wartime caper: a “gentlemen of a certain age” crew using their retirement as camouflage to pull off a covert strike in neutral Goa. The problem is the execution is pretty plain and workmanlike, with action that rarely feels sharp or suspenseful and a pace that can drift when you’re expecting a tighter thriller. If you’re coming for high-octane war spectacle or a slick espionage ride, this will likely feel like it’s running on fumes. Still, there’s comfort in the veteran-star charisma (Peck, Moore, Niven) and the premise is inherently likable, so it plays best as a mellow, nostalgic adventure rather than a pulse-pounder.
