Prom Night (1980)

Prom Night is the kind of early-’80s slasher that understands horror is most fun when it’s dressed up for a big night out: pulsing disco energy, high-school pageantry, and a creeping sense that the past is about to crash the party. Paul Lynch builds suspense with a steady, prowling confidence, and Jamie Lee Curtis anchors the film with a grounded likability that makes the danger feel personal rather than perfunctory. It delivers the genre’s essential jolts—masked menace, ominous phone calls, and set pieces that snap from teen-movie sparkle to sudden brutality—while also giving the mystery a sharper edge than many of its peers. Fair warning: the violence is nasty and the nudity is very of-its-era, but if you want a classic prom-night nightmare with real momentum and a payoff that sticks, this one earns its corsage.

Prom Night is clearly trying to mash up a whodunit setup with a glossy teen-dance slasher, and it wants that “big event” atmosphere where everyone’s a suspect. The problem is it often feels like it’s borrowing the shape of better late-70s/early-80s horror without matching their tension, spending a lot of time on teen drama and runway-walking around the gym before the suspense really kicks in. The mystery isn’t especially clever, so if you’re coming for a tight, twisty thriller, you may find yourself ahead of the movie and waiting for it to catch up. Still, Jamie Lee Curtis brings real presence and the prom setting has a fun, trashy charm, so it can work if you want a straightforward, old-school slasher and don’t mind moderate nudity and some pretty nasty violence.
