Motel Hell (1980)
Farmer Vincent Smith and his sister Ida run a motel attached to a farm where they capture unsuspecting travelers, bury them alive, fatten them up and then harvest their bodies as ingredients for his famous brand of "smoked meats."
What people think about Motel Hell
Motel Hell is that rare horror-comedy that doesn’t just wink at the genre—it skewers it, turning backwoods terror into a proudly weird slice of Americana with a grin as sharp as its chainsaw. Kevin Connor keeps the tone delightfully off-kilter, balancing genuine creepiness with punchline timing, and Rory Calhoun plays Farmer Vincent with such folksy charm you almost forget you should be backing toward the exit. The movie’s grotesque imagery is inventive rather than mean-spirited, and its satire of “homegrown” hospitality and consumer appetites lands with a mischievous bite. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s grisly violence and cannibalistic mayhem—but if you like your scares served with pitch-black laughter, this is a cult classic that earns its reputation.
Motel Hell is clearly trying to mash up grindhouse horror with a cheeky, backwoods satire, and on paper the “farm-to-table” cannibal premise is deliciously nasty. The problem is the movie’s tone wobbles: the jokes can feel strained while the gore and cruelty (people buried alive, mutilation, meat-processing nastiness) lands more unpleasant than playfully shocking. If you’re looking for genuinely scary horror or consistently sharp comedy, this can come off like a one-note idea stretched thin, with uneven pacing and low-budget execution that won’t work for everyone. Still, if you enjoy scruffy cult oddities, practical effects, and a memorable final-act escalation, it has just enough weird personality to justify a late-night watch—provided you’ve got a strong stomach.
