Foxes (1980)
A group of friends come of age in the asphalt desert of the San Fernando Valley, as set to a blazing soundtrack and endless drinking, drugs and sex.
What people think about Foxes
Foxes captures that rare, electric moment when youth feels infinite and the future feels like a dare, turning the San Fernando Valley into a sun-bleached arena where friendship, freedom, and consequence collide. It’s a gritty, sensitive coming-of-age drama with thriller edges, propelled by a blazing soundtrack and a camera that finds beauty in the asphalt and heartbreak in the quiet pauses. Jodie Foster anchors the film with a performance that’s both tough and tender, making the characters’ choices feel less like movie “rebellion” and more like real life unfolding in real time. It’s not a comfort watch—its honesty about drinking, drugs, and sex can be raw—but if you want an ambitious, thoughtful portrait of adolescence that doesn’t talk down to its characters, Foxes hits hard and lingers.
Foxes is aiming for a gritty, sun-bleached coming-of-age snapshot of Valley teens spiraling through parties, sex, and substance-fueled freedom, with a soundtrack that wants to do a lot of the heavy lifting. The problem is the story often feels trite and meandering, like it’s circling “youth in trouble” ideas without sharpening them into something memorable or funny. The adult characters are awkwardly wedged in, and the pacing can turn plodding and unfocused, so if you need a clear narrative drive, you may find it dull. Still, if you’re in the mood for an era-specific mood piece with raw energy and a strong sense of place, you might get something out of it—just don’t expect a tight, satisfying plot.
