Caddyshack (1980)
At an exclusive country club, an ambitious young caddy, Danny Noonan, eagerly pursues a caddy scholarship in hopes of attending college and, in turn, avoiding a job at the lumber yard. In order to succeed, he must first win the favour of the elitist Judge Smails, and then the caddy golf tournament which Smails sponsors.
What people think about Caddyshack
Caddyshack is the kind of comedy that feels like it was built to be quoted for the rest of your life: loose, rowdy, and powered by the joyful chaos of great comedians riffing at full throttle. Harold Ramis turns an uptight country-club world into a playground where snobbery gets punctured, egos get deflated, and every scene seems to find a new way to be absurd, thanks to the pitch-perfect clash between Chevy Chase’s effortless cool, Rodney Dangerfield’s glorious vulgarity, and Ted Knight’s tightly wound outrage. The vibe is irreverent and anything-goes—more a hangout of unforgettable characters than a neatly engineered story—and that’s exactly why it works when you’re in the mood for big laughs and anarchic energy. It’s definitely not for everyone (it’s R-rated, crude, and proudly messy), but if you want a comedy that swings hard and lands often, this one’s a classic for a reason.
Caddyshack is trying to be a loose, anything-goes satire of country-club snobbery, built around big personalities riffing until something hilarious lands. When it works, it’s because Dangerfield, Chase, and Ted Knight are basically running separate comedy movies that occasionally collide in genuinely iconic moments. But if you need a coherent story, consistent tone, or jokes that feel less like random sketches stitched together, this can come off messy, juvenile, and oddly shapeless. It’s best for viewers who enjoy classic, R-rated, improvised-feeling comedy and don’t mind that the plot is mostly an excuse to hang out with the chaos.
