The Villain (1979)

The Villain is a live-action cartoon disguised as a Western, a cheerfully ridiculous spoof that plays like Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote got lost in Monument Valley and decided to start blowing each other up. Hal Needham stages gag after gag with the confidence of someone who knows the plot is just a clothesline for pratfalls, and Kirk Douglas attacks Cactus Jack with such gloriously overcooked commitment you can practically hear the anvil whistling in from offscreen. Ann-Margret brings sparkle and mischief, while Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stone-faced heroism becomes part of the joke, giving the whole thing a buoyant, Saturday-afternoon vibe. If you want a traditional Western or subtle comedy, this isn’t your saddle, but if you’re in the mood for a cult-y, PG, Looney Tunes-esque romp, it’s hard to resist how shamelessly it commits to being silly.

The Villain is clearly aiming for a live-action Looney Tunes Western, with Kirk Douglas throwing himself into endless backfiring traps while Ann-Margret and Arnold Schwarzenegger play it straight as the targets. The problem is the gags often feel stretched and mistimed, so what should be snappy cartoon chaos turns into a long slog of repetitive slapstick. If you’re expecting a clever parody, sharp jokes, or even a satisfying Western adventure, this will likely test your patience. That said, if you have a soft spot for broad, kid-friendly PG silliness and can enjoy the sheer commitment of the cast even when the comedy doesn’t land, you might still get a few chuckles out of it.
