Meatballs (1979)

Meatballs is special because it captures that fleeting, sunburnt magic of summer camp and bottles it into a comedy that feels loose, lived-in, and genuinely warm without ever getting sentimental. Ivan Reitman gives Bill Murray room to do what he does best—riff with lightning timing and offhand charm—while still letting a sweet undercurrent sneak in as a misfit kid finds his footing. The vibe is scrappy and rowdy, full of pranks, crushes, and that glorious underdog energy that makes you want to cheer even as you’re laughing. It’s also very much a product of its era, with plenty of bawdy jokes and some dated sexual humor, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you want an easygoing, crowd-pleasing comedy with a surprisingly big heart, this is the one to pack for.

Meatballs wants to be a scruffy, feel-good summer-camp hangout comedy, with Bill Murray riffing his way through pranks, pep talks, and underdog bonding. The problem is it’s more breezy than hilarious: the plot is predictable, the pacing can meander, and the sweetness sometimes smothers the comedy instead of sharpening it. It also carries a very dated “boys will be boys” vibe with lots of innuendo and some scenes that play harassment for laughs, which may be an instant dealbreaker. If you’re in the mood for loose, nostalgic camp antics and Murray’s early charm, it’s an easy watch; if you want sharper satire or big, consistent laughs, you’ll likely find it too mild.
