The In-Laws (1979)

The In-Laws is that rare comedy that plays like a full-fledged adventure, using its outrageous spy-movie momentum to squeeze out laughs that keep escalating without ever losing control. Watching Alan Arkin’s tightly wound, decent dentist get yanked out of his safe Manhattan routine by Peter Falk’s grin-and-go “government agent” is a masterclass in comic chemistry—Arkin’s panic and Falk’s breezy confidence fit together like a lock and a pick. Arthur Hiller keeps the tone light on its feet even when the set pieces turn surprisingly big, so the chases and shootouts feel like punchlines with wheels rather than grim danger. If you prefer your humor subtle or your action realistic, it may be a bit manic, but if you enjoy deadpan nerves colliding with gleeful chaos, this is an absolute treat.

If you’re hoping for a sharper, more grounded comedy or more of the social-cringe dinner party setup, you may find the later action detours noisy and a bit smugly cynical.
