Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens (1979)

Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens is Russ Meyer at his most unhinged and technically confident: a delirious, hyper-edited comic fever dream that barrels forward on pure cinematic adrenaline. Co-written with Roger Ebert, it’s packed with punchline rhythms, cartoonish American satire, and a swooping narration that makes the whole thing feel like a dirty postcard from a parallel Smalltown U.S.A. The energy is infectious and the craft is real—Meyer cuts and composes like a man trying to outpace his own imagination—but it’s also aggressively explicit and gleefully transgressive, pushing sexual taboo so hard it can be alienating. If you can meet it on those terms, it’s a one-of-a-kind midnight-movie experience: rude, loud, and weirdly exhilarating.

Russ Meyer is clearly aiming for a raunchy, cartoonish satire of “respectable” small-town America, cranked up into a nonstop parade of sexual taboo and exaggerated bodies. The problem is that what’s meant to play as outrageous comedy repeatedly leans into material many viewers will find outright nasty rather than funny, with consent issues and extreme scenarios that can feel more like provocation than wit. It’s also shaggy and overlong, so if you’re not already on its frequency, the joke wears thin fast and the “satire” starts to look like an excuse for indulgence. If you’re a Meyer completist or have a high tolerance for sleaze-as-farce, there’s energy and craft in the staging, but if you want clever sex comedy or anything remotely modern in its gender perspective, this will likely be a hard pass.
