All That Jazz (1979)
Joe Gideon is at the top of the heap, one of the most successful directors and choreographers in musical theater. But he can feel his world slowly collapsing around him - his obsession with work has almost destroyed his personal life, and only his bottles of pills keep him going.
What people think about All That Jazz
All That Jazz is the rare movie musical that uses song-and-dance the way great drama uses dialogue: to expose a soul, not to decorate a story. Bob Fosse turns the backstage world into a pulsing fever dream of ambition and denial, and Roy Scheider gives a career-best performance that’s all charm on the surface and quiet panic underneath, carried along by editing and choreography so sharp they feel like a heartbeat you can’t slow down. The vibe is electric, cynical, funny in a bruised way, and then suddenly devastating—showbiz as both narcotic and confession. It’s not for everyone if you want a comforting musical or a tidy moral lesson, but if you’re open to something bold, adult, and astonishingly alive, this one doesn’t just entertain; it stares right back at you.
All That Jazz is Bob Fosse turning his own brilliance and burnout into a feverish, semi-autobiographical showbiz confession, and it’s clearly aiming for a dazzling mix of musical spectacle and existential dread. When it works, Roy Scheider is magnetic and the choreography/editing are electric, with set pieces that still feel audacious. But it can also come off as self-indulgent and emotionally chilly—more impressed with its own misery than interested in giving you a clean story or a protagonist you can truly root for. If you don’t enjoy cynical, surreal, “artist destroys himself” narratives (with heavy drugs/sex/smoking throughout) and you need tighter motivation and warmth, this may feel like a stylish slog rather than a masterpiece.
