Superman (1978) is special because it doesn’t treat heroism as a pose—it treats it as a promise, and somehow makes you believe a man can fly not just through effects, but through feeling. Richard Donner balances bright, old-fashioned adventure with a sincere, almost storybook warmth, letting Christopher Reeve pull off the magic trick of being both charmingly awkward Clark Kent and effortlessly iconic Superman. Margot Kidder’s Lois sparks with wit and momentum, while Gene Hackman turns Lex Luthor into a delightfully theatrical menace that keeps the movie buoyant even when the stakes soar. If you prefer modern superhero films to be darker and more grounded, this may feel earnest and a bit quaint—but if you want spectacle with heart and a sense of wonder that still holds up, this is the one that set the standard.

Superman (1978) is earnestly trying to sell you on wonder first and action second, laying down the mythic “origin” template with a big heart and an even bigger sense of optimism. But if you need modern pacing, tight editing, or effects that don’t show their age, parts of this will feel slow, a bit clunky, and occasionally more quaint than thrilling. Gene Hackman’s Lex leans comedic and chatty rather than truly menacing, which can make the stakes feel oddly lightweight even when the plot says “global disaster.” Still, Christopher Reeve is so effortlessly charming in both personas, and the film’s sincerity is the hook—if you can meet it on its old-school terms, it’s a classic; if not, it may feel like homework with a cape.
