Piranha (1978)

Piranha is the rare creature-feature that knows exactly what it is and gets even better because of that self-awareness: Joe Dante turns a simple “fish on the loose” premise into a sly, fast-moving ride with real satirical bite. It’s gory and gleefully mischievous, mixing B-movie thrills with a wink at authority figures and corporate cover-ups, so you’re laughing one minute and wincing the next. The direction keeps the pace snappy and the river-set suspense surprisingly effective, while the script’s sense of humor makes the mayhem feel like a party you can’t quite justify attending.
