Piranha (1978)
When flesh-eating piranhas are accidentally released into a summer resort's rivers, the guests become their next meal.
What people think about Piranha
Piranha is the rare creature-feature that knows exactly what it is and gets even better because of that self-awareness: Joe Dante turns a simple “fish on the loose” premise into a sly, fast-moving ride with real satirical bite. It’s gory and gleefully mischievous, mixing B-movie thrills with a wink at authority figures and corporate cover-ups, so you’re laughing one minute and wincing the next. The direction keeps the pace snappy and the river-set suspense surprisingly effective, while the script’s sense of humor makes the mayhem feel like a party you can’t quite justify attending. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the film doesn’t pull its punches, so if you’re squeamish or sensitive to kids in danger, it may not be your kind of fun—but if you want a smart, nasty, crowd-pleasing shocker, this is the one.
Piranha (1978) is clearly trying to be a scrappy, satirical creature-feature riff on Jaws, swapping majestic suspense for cheap, nasty chaos and a wink at military cover-ups. The problem is that the pacing can feel lumpy and the attacks start to blur together, with effects and performances that range from charmingly B-movie to plainly mediocre depending on your tolerance. The gore is the main selling point, and it doesn’t flinch—yes, it involves kids—so if you’re squeamish or want tension over splatter, this will feel more gross than thrilling. If you enjoy grindhouse energy, dark humor, and Joe Dante’s playful trash-cinema instincts, there’s fun to be had, but don’t come expecting polished scares or a genuinely suspenseful monster movie.
