Magic (1978)

Magic is one of those rare thrillers that doesn’t just try to scare you—it tries to get under your skin, and it succeeds because it treats its horror like a human problem instead of a carnival trick. Anthony Hopkins gives a ferociously layered performance as a performer whose act starts feeling less like entertainment and more like an unraveling, while Richard Attenborough directs with a patient, creeping confidence that lets dread seep into quiet rooms and familiar faces. The Catskills setting and the showbiz gloss create an uneasy, off-kilter vibe where romance, ambition, and menace sit at the same table, and Ann-Margret and Burgess Meredith add warmth and sharpness that make the tension hit harder. It’s not for viewers who want fast shocks or a playful “killer doll” romp, but if you’re in the mood for smart, character-driven psychological horror, this one still has teeth.

Magic is clearly aiming for a classy, character-driven psychological horror, using the ventriloquist-and-dummy setup as a way to explore fame, repression, and a mind coming undone. The problem is that once the premise hooks you, the story starts to feel heavy-handed and oddly structured, with suspense that doesn’t always build so much as lurch from scene to scene, and a plot that can seem less eerie than it wants to be. If you’re expecting a genuinely chilling horror film or a tightly engineered thriller, the pacing and the conclusion may leave you underwhelmed. Still, Anthony Hopkins commits hard and sells the unraveling, and the film has an unsettling, grown-up tone that might work for you if you’re in the mood for a slow-burn psychodrama with some rough edges.
