Jaws 2 (1978)

Jaws 2 earns its bite by leaning into what the series does best: clean, propulsive suspense powered by Roy Scheider’s weary, stubborn decency as Brody, a man who’s already been right once and can’t afford to be dismissed again. Jeannot Szwarc keeps the tension moving with a slick, sunlit menace—those bright Amity waters feel inviting right up until they don’t—while John Williams’ score returns like a primal warning you can’t ignore. It’s a crowd-pleasing thriller with sturdy effects and a terrific sense of escalating peril, especially once the action shifts to a group of teens stranded at sea and the movie turns into a survival ride. It won’t replace the original’s lightning-in-a-bottle artistry, but if you want a well-made, confidently paced shark scare with strong performances and real momentum, it more than delivers.

Jaws 2 is clearly trying to bottle the first film’s lightning again: Brody versus a complacent town, rising dread on the water, and a big crowd-pleasing finale. The problem is it plays like a reheated version of the original, with fewer surprises and a lot more time spent with teenagers who aren’t nearly as compelling as the adults you came for. The suspense still works in bursts and Roy Scheider remains a solid anchor, but the film leans hard on familiar beats rather than building its own identity. If you want a straightforward, mean-spirited shark-thriller comfort watch, it delivers; if you’re hoping for the same craft, character work, and freshness as Jaws, this one may feel like a competent imitation rather than a must-see sequel.
